Ad Daqahliyah
Ad Daqahliyah is the northern region of Egypt with its narrow part being on the coast of Mediterranean Sea. The capital of the region is the city of El Mansura, which is a relatively new city that was founded in 1220 AD. El Mansura is the centre of the Egypt’s cotton industry as well as the commercial centre of the region. The name El Mansura means 'the victorious' and is known as the 'city of victory'. The historical fame of the city is as the site of defeat of Louise 1X and the Crusader forces by the Mameluke army in 1250. The city itself is an attractive city with elegant villas along the Nile. These villas are from the era when cotton was very important. The inhabitants are light-skinned and fair-haired and their city is regarded as the Queen of the Delta. To the east from the El Mansura is situated ancient Tanis, which once was a major port city and where it is believed Hebrews lived while, enslaved by pharaoh. A great temple, called Zoan in the Bible, is the focal point of ruins that include New Kingdom tombs and monuments.
