Northwest of the town are located remains of three turrets, which used to be a part of a medieval fortress called Aetos (in Greek - an eagle), and which was built between 650 A.C. and 750 A.C. This is where its present name comes from. In 1206 Aetos was destroyed by the Crusaders, and was rebuilt in 1488 as a fortified town. Later, in 17th century the traveller Evlia Chelebi registered it as Chengis, while in the Bulgaria’s Revival Period it was known as Orlovo or Orlovets. At that time it was a considerably big town with a famous fair. The annual four-day long agricultural and crafts fair continued to be held.
There are lots of places of interest in Aitos, such as The Museum’s Ethnographic Collection, The Chengeliev’s House-Museum, and The St. Dimitur Church with its well preserved precious murals.
