The resort village Kiten is situated in the southeastern part of Bulgaria, on the Black Sea coast, 55 km southeast of the center of the region – the town of Bourgas, 5 km south of the municipal center Primorsko and 12 km northwest of the center of the neighbouring municipality – Tzarevo.
The resort lies to the north of the mouth of  the Kitenska river and part of it on the small peninsula Urdoviza.
The history of the resort dates back to ancient times. Right next to today’s village Kiten you may see the ruins of the Urdoviza Fortress, located on the Black Sea peninsula of the same name, 35 km away from Sozopol. The name Urdoviza which has its roots in the remote Bronze Age, comes from the ancient Thrace. It is an old Thracian settlement, which is confirmed by the plentiful finds of antique stone anchors and pottery from the end of the Bronze Age, and namely archaic, classic and hellenistic pottery /mainly amphora fragments/ and fragments of red-glazed Roman vessels, found in the two bays round the peninsula. Now you may still see remains of the fortress wall, which was blocking the peninsula on the mainland side.
When seen from a distance the houses in the village looked like a bunch of flowers and since 1932 it bears the name Kiten (which means floral and pretty, colorful).
Kiten began to grow fast as a resort village in the sixties of the 20th century due to its excellent tourism resources. In the sixties, seventies and eghties big industrial companies,  government departments and organisations built their own recreation and holiday bases on the territory of Kiten. Today the resort is unique with its concentration of organisations’ rest homes, no other Black Sea resort has such richness. In 1962 the village was recognized a national resort. In the nineties the building of private hotels and houses, restaurants,  and places for entertainment was in a flourishing state. For a period of 10 years thirty new hotels have raised, many holiday homes were renovated, and the built-up area of the resort village has increased about 4 times.
The main pecularities of the relief in Kiten, which are very important for the tourism, are the two picturesque bays – Karaagach and Atliman and the golden beaches. There are other small wonderful bays on the Strandja coast /Sozopolski Kavacite, Stomoplo/ and each one of them has its own advantages and enchantment.
The mixture of the sea with the wooded mountain-spurs of Strandja helps very much to the beauty of this place. The beaches are maybe the most important nature wealth of Kiten, which has caused its development as a resort village and as a centre for summer sea recreation. The village has two sandy beaches with a total area of 145 000 sq m. The Northern beach or the so-called "Kiten-Atliman" is situated on the bay of the same name. It has an area of about 81 000 sq m including beautiful sand dunes. On one side the beach is hemmed in by a high rocky shore.
Kiten has a soft, sunny, warm and humid transitional Mediterranean climate. The annual average temperature is 12°C and the average minimum temperature in January is 2°C. The typical for the inner parts of the Strandja Mountains winter freezing weather is not characteristic of Kiten. The daily average temperature is 27°C, summer is warm and the sunny hours from May until October are about 1700.
The main plant sorts that grow in the resort and make it so attractive are the different kinds of oak like nutgall, durmast, bitter oak, and the artificial plantations of white and black pine-trees. The cornel-tree is found too, mainly around the bay Karaagach there are territories afforestated with poplars. The mouth of Kitenska river is overgrown with reed, osier and on the sheer cliff to the South beach you may see virgin’s bower. Certain plants, typical for the region of Strandja, may be seen here. The animal life on the territory of the forestry enterprise /town of Tzarevo/ is represented by red deer, roe deer, wild boar, hare, woodcock which are essential for hunting tourism. Other widely distributed animals are squirrels, hedgehogs, different kinds of snakes, frogs, terrapins, stag-beetles, herring-gulls and other. The variety of animals in the sea and at the river mouth is rich either and is very important for the fishing as a sport and as a way of living of the native people
The nature is extremly beautiful and attractive. There are a lot of little marshes, bizarre rock formations /the Lion’s Head/, marooned old river-beds have developed characteristic plants and animal life, the beaches are vast, the sand dunes are wonderful and the scenery is picturesque. The ecological conditions in the region are very good, which offers great opportunities for the tourism prosperity. Kiten attracts many tourists with the typical summer sea recreation but the combination with the reserves and parks could be a magnet for more visitors. The tourists prefer Kiten because of the clear sea, the beautiful woodland massifs and the main goal is all this to be preserved so that Kiten can retain its fame of an ecologically clean sea resort.
