Satakunta
Satakunta is located on the southwest coast of Finland and is one of the 19 regions in Finland. There are 26 municipalities in the region. The total population of the region is 230 000. The regional centre is the city of Pori, which has appr. 76 200 inhabitants. Finland's fifth longest river, the Kokemäenjoki, flows through the region into the Gulf of Bothnia. It reaches the sea at Pori, forming a major estuary, which is unique in Europe for its vast area of wetlands. The source of the river is in the neighbouring region of Pirkanmaa. The regional identity of Satakunta river basin is based on a unique cultural heritage and natural environment. This cultural heritage includes traditions of trading with both local communities and those further afield and even overseas. As the oldest historical province in Finland, Satakunta can draw upon a wealth of administrative and cultural experience.
The Kokemäenjoki river valley has been identified as one of the major urban and infrastructure corridors in Finland. This corridor connects the most important west coast harbours of Pori and Rauma to other industrial centres of central Finland by means of rail and road networks. Satakunta is located in Finland ´s relatively densely populated southern areas, although Finland is currently the most sparsely populated EU member state. However, the population density varies considerably in the different parts of Satakunta. The largest urban centres are the coastal towns Pori and Rauma. The river valley is also a relatively densely populated urban chain.
